윌셔교회에는 하나님의 특별한 꿈이 있습니다. 우리 교회는 아름다운 한인 공동체와 더불어 백인, 흑인, 필리핀, 멕시칸 등 다양한 민족이 모여 예수님 안에서 한 몸을 이루고 있는 다민족 공동체입니다. 윌셔교회만이 가진 이 독보적인 영적 환경은, 지금으로부터 약 120년 전 성령께서 이 땅에 부으셨던 두 개의 위대한 대부흥의 열매가 한곳으로 수렴된 결과입니다.

 

첫 번째는 1906년, 우리 교회와 아주 가까운 LA 리틀 도쿄 인근에서 일어난 ‘아주사 대부흥’입니다. 당시 LA로 꿈을 품고 몰려든 아시아인과 유색인종들을 향한 백인들의 인종차별은 극에 달해 있었습니다. 그러나 성령의 강력한 역사가 임했을 때, 인간이 세운 장벽은 무너졌습니다. 그들의 얼어붙은 마음이 녹아내렸고, 서로를 부둥켜안으며 용서와 화해의 기적이 일어났습니다. 그 성령의 흐름이 이어져 오늘날의 윌셔교회 다민족 공동체가 탄생했습니다.

 

두 번째는 1907년, 한국 땅을 뒤흔든 ‘평양 대부흥’입니다. 당시 한국은 자신의 영토 안에서 동족의 40% 이상을 노예(노비)로 삼는 잔인한 신분제도가 존재하던 나라였습니다. 하지만 성령의 불길이 임하자, 주인이 노비 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 눈물로 용서를 구했습니다. 노비가 교회의 장로가 되고, 주인은 그 장로를 기쁨으로 섬기는 영적 혁명이 일어났습니다. 이 은혜의 뿌리가 오늘날 우리 윌셔교회 한인 공동체로 이어지고 있습니다.

 

하나님께서는 120년 전 동방과 서방에서 일으키셨던 이 두 개의 대부흥을 바로 이곳, 윌셔교회에서 하나로 만나게 하셨습니다. 그리고 이제 하나님은 우리를 통해 다시 한 번 이 시대의 대부흥을 준비하고 계십니다.

 

부흥의 시작은 거창한 곳에 있지 않습니다. 우리가 먼저 예수님 때문에 행복해할 때, 하나님은 준비된 영혼들을 우리에게 끊임없이 보내주실 것입니다. 윌셔교회가 이 마지막 시대에 하나님의 새로운 대부흥의 진앙지가 되기를 주님의 이름으로 간절히 소망합니다.

"Two Great Revivals, One Divine Vision: Welcome to Wilshire UMC"

 

Wilshire Church is a place where God’s extraordinary dream is coming to life. We are a beautifully woven tapestry of faith—a multi-ethnic community where our Korean congregation thrives alongside Caucasian, African American, Filipino, and Mexican brothers and sisters, all forming one body in Jesus. This unique spiritual environment is not a mere coincidence; it is the glorious fruit of two historical revivals that shook the world nearly 120 years ago, converging right here into one place.

 

The first is the Azusa Street Revival of 1906, which erupted just a short distance from our church near what is now Little Tokyo. At that time, Asian immigrants and people of color who came to Los Angeles chasing their dreams faced severe racial discrimination by the white population. Yet, when the powerful work of the Holy Spirit swept through, human barriers melted away. Their frozen hearts thawed, and people of all races embraced one another in profound forgiveness and reconciliation. The multi-cultural community of Wilshire Church stands today as a direct legacy of that move of God.

 

The second is the Pyongyang Revival of 1907 in Korea. During that era, Korea was bound by a cruel, caste-like system where over 40% of its own people were held as slaves within their own territory. However, when the fire of the Holy Spirit fell upon the nation, an astonishing spiritual revolution took place: masters fell to their knees before their slaves, weeping and asking for forgiveness. Slaves became church elders, and their former masters served them with joy. This root of grace is what shaped the heart of our Korean congregation today.

 

God has allowed these two great revivals, which he kindled in both the East and the West 120 years ago, to meet as one right here at Wilshire Church. And now, God is preparing yet another great revival for this generation through us.

 

True revival does not begin in a grand, spectacular place. When we are truly filled with joy because of Jesus, God will faithfully and continuously send prepared souls into our midst. It is my earnest prayer in the name of the Lord that Wilshire UMC becomes the epicenter of a new spiritual awakening for this final era.
